No less than 64 people were killed in a police operation against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's history.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.
