Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of play.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
